Extending losses for the third straight session, the Indian market closed lower by nearly 1.5% amid rising Russia-Ukraine tensions and surging oil prices. Autos, Metal, Realty and Consume Durables dragged the market the most as indices fell nearly 3% amid geopolitical tension in holiday-shortened week. Dr Reddy, ITC, Tech Mahindra, BPCL, Ultratech cement were some notable gainers, while Titan, Maruti, Asian Paints, Hero MotoCorp and Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra declined the most.
In the Asian market, indices sank sharply amid reports of United States and European Union mulling ban on oil impots from Russia. Japanese Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng Index at the Hong Kong Exchanges tanked nearly 3.5%, while Shanghai Composite traded more than 1% lower around 8 am on Monday.
Earlier on Friday, Dow Jones declined 0.53%, Nasdaq Composite dropped more than 1.5% and S&P500 fell 0.79%.
SGX Nifty, which indicates how the domestic market would open, tanked by 400 points or 2.47% to 15,843.50.
