It is not uncommon for a regular update to bring with it a few bugs to an otherwise seamlessly working device. We recently saw Asus’ Zenfone 6 in a situation like this, but no OEM is spared.
OnePlus recently rolled out the January security patch to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T. This, according to the company, is the last Android 10-based security patch ahead of the stable OxygenOS 11 roll out.
The update’s changelog was pretty slim, only indicating a change in the system’s security patch level and an updated Google Mobile Services
A lightweight changelog like this is a sign of a system that is as refined as it can be, a stable build. Well, at least it was.
Users who have updated their devices to this build are reporting an issue that affects the device’s NFC. According to affected users, this results in GPay not working on their OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T devices.
A thread on Reddit has since been created for affected users and at the time of writing, it had a little over 250 upvotes, perhaps an indication of just how widespread this issue is.
At the time of writing, it is still unclear what exactly causes this issue on the OnePlus 7 and 7T devices that have been updated. One this is for sure though, it is not due to certification problems or Google Play Protect.
OnePlus is yet to issue an official acknowledgment for this issue and it also remains unclear whether this will be addressed with another OTA. This, especially bearing in mind that the company said this would be the last Android 10 update.
In the meantime, reports of this issue from both OnePlus 7 devices (1,2,3,4,5,6) and OnePlus 7T devices (1,2,3) continue to trickle in steadily. We shall continue to keep an eye on this OnePlus 7 GPay issue and update as and when we get more info so stay tuned.
