BSNL which started operating its counterpart Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited’s (MTNL) telecom services from mid-December, was supposed to start offering these services from 1 January 2021.
NEW DELHI: State-run telcoBharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will start providing landline services in national capital Delhi and Mumbai 1 March, according to a Business Standard report.
BSNL which started operating its counterpart Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited’s (MTNL) telecom services from mid-December, was supposed to start offering these services from 1 January 2021.
However, due to internal issues between the two telcos, it got delayed, the publication said while citing an official aware of the development.
Now, BSNL has agreed to go ahead with these services, There were technology-related issues between the two companies and those were causing delays,” an official told the publication without further detailing.
The telco was granted a unified license by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on December 16 that included Delhi and Mumbai telecom service areas, making the telco eligible to offer mobile and fixed-line services in two metropolitans.
Delhi service areas included National Capital Region (NCR) such as Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad while the Mumbai service area would cover New Mumbai and Kalyan.
The ailing telco is also expected to debut its much anticipated 4G services from these two metropolitans, ETTelecom had reported.
The beleaguered BSNL and MTNL have a telecom market share of close to 10.75%.
In October 2019, the Cabinet had approved Rs 68,751-crore revival package for two state-owned telecom carriers that included the allocation of next-generation airwaves, voluntary retirement scheme (VRS), assets monetisation and merger between the two which was then anticipated to be completed within a 24-month timeframe.
