Oscars 2025 Shortlist: Kiran Rao’s critically-acclaimed movie Laapataa Ladies, also known as Lost Ladies, unfortunately didn’t make the cut for the Oscars 2025 shortlist in the Best International Feature category, as announced on December 17. Despite being chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, the film fell short of securing a spot in the shortlist. Laapataa Ladies had previously gained recognition for its unique storytelling and impressive cast, including newcomers Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastav, alongside seasoned actors like Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan.
The Academy has shortlisted 15 films in the Documentary Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards, chosen from 169 eligible entries. These films will move forward in the competition, with final nominations to be announced in January 2025.
Santosh makes it to Oscars 2025 shortlist
Santosh, a poignant Hindi-language film set in rural north India, has achieved a notable distinction by securing a spot in the prestigious ‘Best International Feature Film’ category, marking a significant milestone for this international co-production.
Under the direction of Sandhya Suri, the film tells the compelling story of a determined young widow, played by Shahana, who assumes her late husband’s role as a police constable through a government initiative. As she navigates her new position, she becomes entangled in a web of institutional corruption. Meanwhile, she forms an unlikely bond with Inspector Sharma, a seasoned and rough-around-the-edges detective portrayed by Sunita Rajwar. Together, they delve into a heinous murder case involving a teenage girl from the marginalised Dalit community, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
