Patna Metro’s much-anticipated launch is set for Independence Day next year, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced in the state assembly on Thursday. The statement came as he presented the second supplementary budget of Rs 32,506 crore for the current fiscal, which was passed via voice vote amidst an opposition walkout over alleged irregularities in Social Welfare schemes.
Choudhary, who also serves as the state’s Finance Minister, highlighted the allocation of funds for key projects. “The supplementary budget will support the effective implementation of central and state schemes, including the completion of the first phase of the Patna Metro rail project,” he stated.
Key Features of Patna Metro
The initial phase will include two corridors:
- North-South Corridor: Connecting Patna Junction to Danapur.
- East-West Corridor: Linking Patna Sahib to AIIMS Patna.
These routes are designed to serve high-density areas, ensuring seamless connectivity across the city.

Other Allocations in the Budget
Choudhary detailed plans for the allocated Rs 32,506 crore, including:
- Development of tourism projects, such as a “Tourist Hub” in Kaimur district.
- Funding flagship schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), and PM SHRI Scheme.
- Infrastructure development across the state.
The assembly also passed a Rs 3,028 crore supplementary budget for the Social Welfare Department. However, opposition members walked out, accusing the government of irregularities in welfare schemes. Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni criticized the opposition, asserting that their actions show disregard for the welfare of the state’s weaker sections.
