Wayanad Lok Sabha Bye-Election Result 2024: Priyanka Gandhi is set to enter Parliament for the first time as an MP of Wayanad.

Wayanad Lok Sabha Bypoll Results: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has won the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll on Saturday, marking her first-ever electoral win. She surpassed the margin of votes secured by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, with party leaders and ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) predicting a landslide victory.

As the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate from the scenic hill constituency, Priyanka had extended her lead to over four lakh votes after six hours of ballot counting, according to the Election Commission. Reacting to the trends, Congress ally IUML and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed confidence that Priyanka would exceed the vote tally achieved by Rahul Gandhi in April’s general elections, securing a record-breaking win.

According to the latest EC figures, Priyanka had a lead of 4,10,931 with 6,22,338 votes. LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri was behind her with 2,11,407 votes and NDA’s Navya Haridas was in the third spot with 1,09,939 votes.  Rahul had got 6,47,445 votes and won by a margin of 3,64,422 votes against his nearest rival, CPI’s Annie Raja, in the LS polls this year. In 2019, he had got 7,06,367 votes and had won by a margin of 4,31,770 votes.

After winning from Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh as well, in this year’s polls, Rahul vacated the Wayanad seat, and the party nominated his sister Priyanka, paving the way for her electoral debut. The bypoll turnout in Wayanad, which has over 14 lakh registered voters, was around 65 per cent, a decline from the close to 74 per cent in the LS polls held in April this year and much lower than the over 80 per cent turnout in the hill constituency in the 2019 general elections.

This is the lowest participation recorded in Wayanad since its establishment in 2009. The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency has captured nationwide attention with the Congress nominating Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate to defend the seat previously held by her brother, Rahul Gandhi. In total, 16 candidates are contesting in Wayanad, including Sathyan Mokeri of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Navya Haridas representing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, located in northern Kerala, is one of the most prominent parliamentary constituencies in India. Known for its picturesque landscapes and tribal population, Wayanad holds both cultural and political significance. It came into existence in 2009, following the Delimitation Commission’s recommendations. Wayanad has traditionally been a Congress bastion, with the party maintaining significant influence since the constituency’s creation. With Rahul Gandhi previously holding the seat, the Congress is keen to retain its dominance, while the LDF and NDA aim to make inroads in this Congress stronghold.
