Telecom rule to change from January 1, will affect Mukesh Ambani’s Jio, Airtel, Voda, BSNL, know the new rule

A major rule change is coming into effect from January 1, 2025, which will affect all telecom service providers in the country, including Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio, Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel, Vi, and state-owned BSNL. The Right of Way (RoW) permit rule will come into effect from January 1, with all states being directed to adopt it.

According to an Economic Times (ET) report, the new RoW rules, which were recently notified under the Telecommunications Act, will come into force from January 1 next year, and are aimed to boost the installation of optical fiber lines and telecom towers. In a letter, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Secretary Neeraj Mittal asked states to notify the concerned authorities about the upcoming changes in RoW policies.

Mittal said the new uniform RoW rules will boost the building of telecom infrastructure in the country and will also facilitate faster rollout of 5G technology across India.

What is the RoW rule?

The RoW rule is a set of instructions which mandates standards for the installation of mobile towers and other telecom infrastructure on public or private property across. The rule must mandatorily be followed by both property owners and telecom providers as it prioritizes public safety and transparency.

The new RoW rule simplifies the process for obtaining permissions, maintaining digital records to ensure transparency and efficiency. Earlier, telecom providers had urged the government to implement a uniform RoW policy across the country to ensure efficient and transparent development of telecom infrastructure.

The new RoW rules will positively the affect the growth of all Indian telcos, including Mukesh Ambani-led Jio, BSNL, Bharti Airtel, and Vi.
