Winter 2024: Bathing In Hot Water Can Damage Your Hair And Skin, Warn Doctors

Is bathing in hot water good for your hair and skin, or does the comfort of warmth end up doing more harm? Dr Victoria Barbosa, Associate Professor at the University of Chicago, has shared some fascinating insights on the question with the New York Times.

Damage to Natural Hair Protection

Dr Barbosa explained that while bathing in hot water has benefits, such as activating relaxed nerves and increasing blood circulation, it is not good for your skin, especially if done daily. It can cause significant damage to both the skin and hair. Research has shown that daily hot water baths can strip away the natural oil layer from the skin and hair, leaving them dry and lifeless. Excessive dryness can also lead to hair loss.

Bathing in very hot water removes the natural sebum in the hair, which is essential for protection, leaving hair dry. Sebum is a type of fat that helps protect the hair.

Dermatologist Dr Emily Mackenzie says that although many people believe hot water baths relieve fatigue and provide relaxation, it’s important to note that hot water removes the natural oils from your skin and hair. “The hotter the water, the more oil will be stripped away,” she says.

Therefore, no matter how cold the weather is, it is advisable to bathe in lukewarm water for skin and hair health.

Dr. Mackenzie also recommends using a mild soap, particularly one that contains less glycerine, to avoid further drying of the skin. After bathing, always apply a moisturiser or lotion immediately. This will help protect the skin and maintain the moisture barrier between the skin and the elements.
