IMD Weather Forecast: Dense fog to persist in Delhi, UP and other parts of north India; heavy rainfall likely in southern states

Weather Update: Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to continue over parts of northwest India for the next few days. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast said that dense fog is expected to persist during the night and early morning hours in northwest India, while heavy rainfall is forecast over southern and coastal regions. Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to continue over parts of northwest India for the next few days. 

Areas such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan are expected to experience dense fog during the night and early morning hours until at least November 15, 2024. Isolated pockets in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand will also face dense fog conditions through November 16. The fog is expected to ease gradually in these areas over the coming days.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast

The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in several regions of southern and coastal India. Tamil Nadu is likely to see heavy rainfall until November 16, while heavy rains are also forecast for Coastal Andhra Pradesh on November 14, Kerala until November 17, and South Interior Karnataka on November 14 and 15. 

The forecast indicates a mix of light to moderate rainfall, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, and Rayalaseema between November 14 and 16, 2024.

Furthermore, heavy rainfall is expected in these regions, including: Rayalaseema on November 14, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal from November 14 to 16, Kerala & Mahe from November 14 to 17, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on November 14, South Interior Karnataka on November 14 and 15.

IMD forecasts temperature drop in North, East India

According to IMD, gradual decrease in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C is expected over northwest India during the next five days. However, no significant change in temperatures is anticipated over central India during this period. 

On the other hand, a gradual drop in minimum temperatures by 3-4°C is expected in East India over the next five days. In West India, a rise of 2-3°C in minimum temperatures is likely for the next three days, followed by a gradual fall of 2-3°C thereafter.

Dense smog engulfs city, AQI in ‘severe’ category

Delhi experienced the worst air quality in the country yesterday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to 418, placing it in the “severe” category. This was the first time this season that Delhi’s AQI had reached the “severe” level. The sharp rise from 334 on Tuesday raised alarms about hazardous conditions and the possibility of restrictions under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The weather department predicts clear skies for Thursday, with light northwest winds under 6 km/h in the morning. Dense fog or smog is expected during the early hours, with wind speeds increasing to 10 km/h in the afternoon. By evening, winds will calm again, and smog or mist with moderate fog is anticipated overnight. There has been a slight drop in minimum temperatures across Delhi/NCR in the past 24 hours, with temperatures ranging from 30-33°C (max) to 14-18°C (min).
