IMD Weather Alert: Thick smog blankets Delhi-NCR, heavy rainfall likely in Tamil Nadu and THESE states – Check forecast

Weather officials, however, predict a drop in temperatures starting November 17.

Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, affecting regions near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. This development is expected to bring isolated heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu until November 16, with similar conditions in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema until November 14, Kerala from November 13 to 17, and South Interior Karnataka from November 13 to 15.

The IMD predicts stable minimum temperatures over northwest and central India for the next five days, while eastern India will see a gradual drop in temperatures by 3-4°C over the coming days.

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms in THESE states

The IMD warns of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema from November 12 to 16. Rayalaseema, south Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Kerala and Mahe from November 13 to 17, and in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 13 and 14.

A fresh Western Disturbance is forecast to affect the Western Himalayan region starting on November 14, bringing possible precipitation to these areas.

Dense fog predicted in northern states

Dense to very dense fog is likely during late night and early morning hours in isolated pockets of Punjab until November 14, with dense fog continuing for two subsequent days. Similar conditions are expected in Himachal Pradesh until November 17 and in parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh until November 15.

Thick smog blankets Delhi-NCR

Delhi remains shrouded in a thick layer of smog, with the city’s air quality staying in the ‘Very Poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). A thick layer of smog covered Delhi and neighboring areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad on Wednesday morning. AQI levels in Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad were categorized as ‘Poor’. Faridabad reported a relatively better AQI of 188, which falls under the ‘Moderate’ category. 

Visibility was significantly reduced as Delhi’s AQI remained in the ‘Very Poor’ category for the past two weeks before worsening into the ‘Severe’ range. The second stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) continues to be enforced in the national capital, which includes mechanical sweeping, water sprinkling on designated roads, and the implementation of dust control measures at construction and demolition sites.

Mercury likely to drop in Delhi from Nov 17

Delhi is experiencing unusually high temperatures this November, with weather patterns that typically signal the arrival of winter not yet in place. Weather officials, however, predict a drop in temperatures starting November 17. Despite being well into November, both daytime and nighttime temperatures in Delhi remain significantly above the usual seasonal averages. 

As of the second week of the month, daily highs are still above 30°C, while nighttime temperatures range between 16°C and 18°C. This is a sharp contrast to previous years, when nighttime temperatures would typically drop to between 10°C and 15°C by this time. Historical data from 2011 to 2023 shows that November temperatures usually decrease, with daytime highs averaging between 25°C and 28°C, and nighttime lows ranging from 10°C to 15°C.

Heavy downpour expected in many Tamil Nadu districts

Chennai and eleven other districts in Tamil Nadu are set to experience heavy rainfall on Wednesday, November 13, as per IMD. Areas such as Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Kanyakumari, and others are expected to witness heavy downpours, along with thunderstorms and lightning. In response to the IMD warning, Chennai’s administration declared a school holiday on Tuesday, though no official announcement has been made regarding Wednesday’s holiday.
