In eastern India, Cyclone Dana’s impact brought torrential rains to coastal districts of West Bengal.

The air quality in Delhi showed a minor improvement on Friday, moving from the “very poor” to the “poor” category, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Clear skies and a maximum temperature of around 34 degrees Celsius are expected for the day, along with the first signs of a “pink winter” arriving in the mornings as October ends.

In eastern India, Cyclone Dana’s impact brought torrential rains to coastal districts of West Bengal. While areas like East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas were initially predicted to face significant effects, no severe damage has been reported. Kolkata and other districts in South Bengal experienced continuous rain since late Thursday night, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall until the evening before tapering off.

Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, Cyclone Dana’s influence brought light to moderate rainfall across Kolhan’s West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, and East Singhbhum districts. The IMD had issued an “Orange Alert” for the Kolhan region, prompting the closure of schools across these districts on October 25 for safety.

Minimal Damage in Odisha and West Bengal, Operations Resumed

Odisha and West Bengal experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds, uprooting trees and power lines as Cyclone Dana made landfall. However, no significant infrastructural damage was reported, allowing flight and rail operations to resume shortly afterward. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi confirmed the state’s “zero human casualties” mission success, highlighting that safety measures minimized impacts across the coast. The Biju Patnaik International Airport resumed operations by 9 a.m. on Friday, while East Coast Railway reported normal scheduling except for previously cancelled trains.

Heavy Rains Forecast in Kerala

The IMD has also issued an “Orange Alert” for several districts in Kerala due to cyclonic activity in the Arabian Sea off the southern coast. Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts are expected to see very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall through October 27. Moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds may affect other parts of the state as well.

The IMD advises caution in affected areas, urging residents to stay updated on weather alerts as states prepare for further developments associated with Cyclone Dana’s residual effects.
