Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has officially approved this incentive scheme, and the details are expected to be released in an official notification soon. The government hopes this initiative will help reduce the number of outdated vehicles on the road and help regulate the pollution caused.

“The government will incentivise those who opt for the scrapping of their old vehicles, through rebate in motor-vehicle tax on buying new vehicles within three years,” the Delhi government said in a statement.

The tax rebate structure outlined in the announcement specifies that buyers will receive varying percentages based on the type of vehicle they purchase. Specifically, individuals who opt for non-commercial CNG and petrol vehicles will receive a 20 per cent tax rebate. For those purchasing commercial CNG and petrol vehicles, the rebate will be set at 15 per cent, while buyers of diesel vehicles will receive only a 10 per cent rebate on tax.

This policy is designed with a clear objective: to facilitate the removal of older, more polluting vehicles from the roads. By promoting the adoption of newer vehicles that meet upgraded emission standards, the initiative aims to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability and improved air quality in the region.

To take advantage of this initiative, one must first obtain a certificate of deposit by scrapping their old vehicle at a facility that is registered for this purpose. This certificate serves as proof of the vehicle’s disposal and must be submitted during the registration process of the new vehicle within a three-year timeframe to qualify for the tax rebate, the government notification states.
