45 children hospitalised after eating mid-day meal at Thane school

A medical official noted that the meal served consisted of rice and moth bean (matki) curry. Food samples have been collected by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for further analysis.

Seven more children were admitted to a hospital due to suspected food poisoning after consuming a mid-day meal at a private school near Thane, Maharashtra, bringing the total number of affected minors to 45, officials said on Wednesday.

The children, aged between 8 and 11, were taken to a civic hospital in Kalwa after experiencing symptoms such as giddiness, nausea, headaches and abdominal pain following their lunch on Tuesday, according to hospital authorities.

Initially, 38 students were admitted on Tuesday, with an additional seven brought in later that night. Dr Aniruddha Malgaonkar, the hospital’s medical in-charge, stated that the children were being closely monitored and would likely be discharged by Wednesday afternoon if deemed fit.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Additional Commissioner Sandeep Malvi confirmed that all children were out of danger and responding well to treatment. He also verified that the students had consumed a mid-day meal at the private school.

The school administration promptly called ambulances, and the affected children were transported to the hospital as their symptoms worsened. Concerned parents were also present at the hospital as their children received medical attention.
