51 killed, 223 injured in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon: Health Ministry

The cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been active since October 8, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel.

Beirut: At least 51 people were dead and 223 injured due to the continued Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, as per the Lebanese Health Ministry. As per a report in Xinhua news agency, the Ministry confirmed casualties at multiple locations across southern and eastern Lebanon, including Bint Jbeil, Ain Qana, Qabrikha and Tebnine.

Military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to Xinhua that Israeli warplanes struck around 90 villages and towns in southern and eastern Lebanon. Among the casualties was Kamel Karaki, a photojournalist for Lebanese Al-Manar TV, who was killed in a strike on the southeastern village of Qantara. Furthermore, local media reported a minimum of seven deaths and 16 injuries due to strikes near Beirut, including three fatalities in Maaysrah, located northeast of the capital, and four in Joun in the Chouf district.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Hezbollah launched a surface-to-surface missile at Tel Aviv early Wednesday, activating sirens throughout the city and nearby areas. The IDF said it intercepted the missile using the David’s Sling defence system, with no injuries or damage reported.

In a statement, the IDF announced the mobilization of two reserve ground brigades to the Israel-Lebanon border after conducting a “situational assessment.” They noted that the troops would be engaged in “operational activities on the northern front.” It stated that the mobilisation would “enable the continuation of combat against Hezbollah, the defence of Israel, and create the conditions for northern Israel’s residents to return to their homes”.

This increase in violence comes after Israeli bombardments on Monday and Tuesday, which are the most significant Israeli assaults on Lebanon since 2006. Official reports show that the two-day strikes have resulted in over 550 deaths and approximately 1,800 injuries in Lebanon.

On Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike targeting a residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs resulted in the deaths of Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Muhammad Qubaisi and five others, as reported by the Shia militant group.

The escalation follows last week’s explosions that targeted communication devices  -pagers and walkies-talkies – throughout Lebanon, resulting in dozens of fatalities. The cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been active since October 8, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel.
