14 Dead As Indian Passenger Bus From Pokhara Plunges Into Marsyangdi River In Nepal, Rescue Ops On

At least 11 people were killed after an Indian-registered passenger bus with 40 people onboard plunged into the Marsyangdi River in central Nepal on Friday. The accident took place at Aaina Pahara in Tanahun district. The bus entered Nepal from Belahiya check-point (from Gorakhpur, India) in Rupandehi on 20th August with 8-day permit. “The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river,” DSP Deepkumar Raya from the District Police Office Tanahun confirmed. As per the official, the bus was en route to Kathmandu from Pokhara.

A team of 45 Armed Police Force personnel led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School has already reached the accident site and is carrying out the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, an MI-17 helicopter of Nepal Army carrying a medical team has flown to the incident site in Tanahun district from the helipad in Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Communications department of Nepal Army said.

UP govt sends SDM to incident site

The Uttar Pradesh government has sent an SDM to the incident site in Nepal. An ADM has also been appointed to coordinate the relief work. Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner GS Naveen Kumar in a press statement said, “As per media reports and further confirmed from the MEA Nepal Division, today at about 11:30 am, a bus with registration number – UP 53 FD 7623 carrying approx 41 passengers from Maharashtra, including the driver and one assistant, fell around 150 metres into river Marshyandi in Ambukhereni region in the Tanahu District of Nepal.

“In this incident, till now 14 persons have been rescued in unconscious condition and 17 injured passengers rescued in conscious condition. All the passengers have been shifted to hospital. A search and rescue operation is underway by Nepal Police, armed police force and the Nepal Army.”

The statement added, “The UP government has sent SDM Maharajganj to the incident site. The MEA is coordinating the search and rescue operations with local authorities.”

In July this year, 65 people on board two buses were swept into a swollen river Trishuli in Nepal.The incident, involving the Kathmandu-bound Angel bus and Ganpati Deluxe which was headed from Kathmandu to Rautahat’s Gaur., occurred amid heavy downpour in the region.
