X is trying out new features for users that promises to enhance the experience but some of you might not feel the same.
Elon Musk-owned micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter) is reportedly developing a new feature that could allow users to disable links in replies to their posts. While the exact reason for this update has not been confirmed, it is likely aimed at addressing the issue of spam bots, which often leave promotional links in response to other users’ posts.

According to an app researcher, the new feature would enable users to choose an option to prevent others from including links in replies to their posts. Nima Ojwi shared a screenshot of the new update on X and wrote, “X is working on the ability to let you disable links in the replies of your posts!”
Meanwhile, Christopher Stanley, the Senior Director for Security Engineering at X, also confirmed the development of this new feature. While replying to a subsequent post, he wrote, “My team built this.”

Neither X nor Elon Musk has confirmed the exact rollout date for this new update. However, it is anticipated that the feature will be available to users in the coming weeks.
The link-disabling option is designed to help keep readers focused on the primary topic of posts and to prevent access to irrelevant content. Additionally, this feature is expected to be a significant relief for users who are frustrated by spambots.

Notably, dealing with the problem of spam bots has been one of Elon Musk’s top priorities since his takeover. He had also tested a ‘Not a Bot’ programme for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines. It required new users to pay a USD 1 (approximately Rs 83) annual fee for using basic features like replying, liking or bookmarking a post.
The feature could also help deter users who frequently share dubious content, in addition to combating spam bots. However, it may also hinder those who use reliable sources to refute false information and counteract fake news.
Additionally, X announced a month ago that it would make likes private for all users. Recently, it was discovered that the platform is also working on a YouTube-style dislike button, which will enable users to downvote posts and comments.
