WhatsApp introduces ‘Context Card’

It often happens that when we get added to  a group, we are unaware of the origins and the people included in those groups. And when users are added to a group by someone they don’t know, it feels quite awkward. In addition to this often users land up being targeted for different fraudulent activities.

According to sources, the Context Card builds on WhatsApp’s existing safety and privacy features. Users can already control who can add them to groups through privacy settings. Furthermore, the Context Card will display key details such as:

  • Who added them to the group
  • When the group was created
  • Who created the group
  • The group description

What’s the ‘Context’ about

Early reports suggest that WhatsApp has been struggling with the rising cases of online scams. It looks like there has been  news of scams, where scammers target users through groups. For example, many users in India have lost lakhs and crores after getting added to financial WhatsApp group. People seem to have faced scams after  following the lucrative offers circulated in these groups without verifying the authenticity of the groups.

The new WhatsApp feature aims to provide crucial information about unfamiliar group chats. This can eventually help you in making informed decisions and protecting yourselves from potential scams.

Furthermore, the Context Card feature has already started rolling out and is expected to be available to all users in the coming weeks.
