Mumbai Rain: City Waterlogged After Overnight Showers, Flights Delayed, Local Train Services Affected; IMD Says More Rain Likely

Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging. Several roads and low-lying areas were submerged, impacting traffic flow and daily activities. Normal life was disrupted with people facing difficulties in commuting various services as train services and flight operations are disrupted.

Mumbai received heavy rainfall on Sunday which led to water-logging, massive traffic congestion on roads, and delays in train and flight services. The, which included heavy overnight showers, is expected to persist this week. Weather forecast of IMD stated that it would be a rainy day for Mumbai as moderate to heavy rains would occur throughout the day on July 8. The local weather department said that there was a continuous rain in Mumbai’s Dindoshi early Monday as several parts of the area had waterlogged. The IMD had predicted a rainfall warning in Maharashtra that spans over three to four days. The MeT department said that there will be heavy rain in the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada districts from July 8 to July 10, 2024.

The city recorded over 300 mm of rain at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am, according to the civic officials. Several areas, including Andheri, Kurla, Bhandup, King’s Circle, and Dadar, among other locations, reported significant water accumulation. The incessant rain overwhelmed storm drains, causing traffic to come to a standstill in many parts of India’s financial capital.

Mass transportation in the form of local train services in Mumbai were affected on various routes due to waterlogging which resulted from the rainfall. Some sections of the city have been submerged in water after the heavy rains fell the other day.

School closed

The BMC has announced a holiday for the first session in all BMC, government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai on Monday in the view of a heavy rain alert.

The BMC will take the decision for the next session after reviewing the situation

Here’s the list of trains cancelled today due to waterlogging

Central Railway suburban services have been affected due to heavy rains in Mumbai. Train services are affected at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations.

The Central Railways on Monday stated that the multiple trains were stopped as the water was above the tracks. The trains were stopped nearly for an hour.

The administration informed that the train services have been resumed, however, several routes remain affected due to the waterlogging on tracks.

Airlines issue advisory:

In view of the unfavourable weather conditions in Delhi, the Vistara airline advised commuters to plan their journey to the airport accordingly. “Heavy traffic congestion and slow vehicle movement are expected enroute to Mumbai Airport today due to weather conditions. Customers are advised to allow more time for their journey to the airport,” the airline said in a statement.
