From the good old days of having a book, then to a paper, and now, a card, vehicle registration certificates have seen an evolution, however, one problem persists — losing the RC. While it may seem like the end of the world, getting a replacement is easy. One has to follow a few steps and have a set of documents to get a duplicate.
A duplicate RC can be obtained online or offline, and we explain the steps in detail. Before that, there are a few documents needed, and ensure that the below-mentioned paperwork is ready.
- A copy of the FIR report for proof of loss
- Form 26 (available at the RTO)
- Copy of the lost RC
- Valid insurance certificate
- Tax clearance for commercial vehicles
- Identity proof
- Current address proof
- PUC certificate
- Engine and chassis number pencil mark
How to get duplicate RC online
To get a duplicate RC online, one needs to visit the Parivahaan Sewa portal, select online RC services, then choose online services, followed by services on driving license, and then select ‘issue of duplicate RC’. Next, fill up the details carefully and double-check them before submission. In the next step, you will be asked to upload certain documents.

Once the process is done, you will be asked to make a payment, depending on your location and the postal charges. Once this is made, double-check all the details and documents and say submit. Now, you will get an application number which can be tracked until the duplicate RC reaches your address.
How to get duplicate RC offline
To get a duplicate RC offline, one must visit the nearest RTO with all the documents, and fill out form 26 which needs details such as vehicle number, engine number, chassis number, etc. Again, double, and if needed, triple-check all the details.
Next, attach all the necessary supporting documents, pay the fees, and submit the paperwork. Once done, you will get a reference number, which again can be tracked online. The duplicate RC could take time depending on the reason and how many requests a particular RTO has, so there will be some waiting involved.
