IMD said a fresh spell of heatwave conditions is emerging over northwest India starting from today.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Maharashtra and Coastal & North Interior Karnataka over the next five days. According to the IMD’s latest update, a fresh spell of heatwave conditions is emerging over northwest India starting from today. Additionally, heatwave conditions are expected to persist over parts of east & east-central India, Uttar Pradesh, and northeast Madhya Pradesh throughout the forthcoming five-day period.
Over the next few days, East India is expected to experience a notable increase in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C. Conversely, Central India is forecasted to see no significant change in maximum temperatures over the next three days, followed by a subsequent rise of 2-3°C. Meanwhile, Northwest India, excluding Rajasthan, is anticipated to witness a more pronounced rise in maximum temperatures, with an increase of 3-4°C projected over the next five days.

Southwest Monsoon reaches Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha
According to a statement by the IMD posted on X, the Southwest Monsoon has progressed into additional regions including the central Arabian Sea, southern Maharashtra, Telangana, parts of southern Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and further sections of Coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 8. The IMD has identified conducive conditions for the Southwest Monsoon to extend its reach into the central Arabian Sea, select areas of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), and Telangana within the next 2-3 days.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Telangana during next 2-3 days,” IMD said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon arrived in Odisha yesterday, four days earlier than expected, and enveloped sections of Malkangiri district. Additionally, the IMD predicted the possibility of thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, in certain areas of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada districts on Sunday.
“Southwest Monsoon has set in over Odisha today. It covered some parts of Malkangiri district of Odisha,” the regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar said.
Delhi weather update
The national capital is bracing for strong surface winds forecasted by the weather department for Sunday. The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for dust storms and thunderstorms today, prompted by the city’s soaring temperatures. Although the IMD hasn’t issued a heatwave alert, temperatures could still reach 42 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, there’s a chance for relief as light rain is anticipated later in the day. Humidity levels are projected to fluctuate between 42 and 25 percent, while temperatures are expected to peak at around 42 degrees Celsius and drop to a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius.
IMD issues red alert in Maharashtra, Goa; Orange for Kerala
IMD has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg, an orange alert for Ratnagiri, and a yellow alert for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad on June 9. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy rain spells with gusty winds are expected across these areas.
“Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to heavy spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad during next 3-4 hours. (starting from 04:00 am on Sunday),” IMD said.
The weather office has also issued a red alert for Goa, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall over the next two days. Monsoon activity has been active over the coastal state in the last 24 hours, with moderate rainfall recorded in many places and very heavy showers in some areas. The red alert extends for June 9 and June 10, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in North and South Goa districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated spots. An orange alert has been issued for June 11 and 12.
Additionally, in the view of the possibility of very heavy rainfall, IMD issued an ‘orange alert’ for five districts in Kerala. According to the latest update from the IMD, the southern district of Pathanamthitta and the northern districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod have been placed under an orange alert for the day. Additionally, the weather agency has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for eight districts in the state, cautioning of heavy rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Malappuram.
