Nashik Water Crisis: Water Stock Hits Critical Levels As THESE 8 Dams Run Dry

Nashik Water Crisis: Maharashtra’s Nashik is facing an alarming water crisis and the situation is likely to become grimmer as at least eight out of 24 dams in the district have run completely dry, plummeting the water stock to critical levels.

As per officials, at least 8 out of 24 dams in Nashik district are left with no water stock, exacerbating the water scarcity situation amid scorching heat. The remaining 16 dams hold 5,862 MCFT (8.93 per cent) water stock as of June 5, they said on Wednesday.

Ojharkhed, Punegaon, Tisgaon, Bhavali, Waldevi, Bhojapur, Nagasakya and Manikpunj dams have run dry, while Gangapur dam, which supplies water to Nashik city, has 1,273 MCFT stock, they said.

The reason for the low water stock is due to a mostly-dry monsoon last year, during which the Nashik district received only 70 percent of the average rainfall, resulting in a drought-like situation in the region, experts believe.

District officials said the residents are being supplied with drinking water via tankers Nashik is facing a critical water crisis caused by a poor monsoon season last year. They expressed hope that the situation will be mitigated with plentiful rains in this year’s monsoon which will help restore the water stock levels to normal.

The unprecedented heat wave in the region has added to the people’s woes as most wells and other sources of water in Nashik’s rural areas, have also dried up, they said.
