A knife-wielding attacker injured several people at an “anti-Islam” event in a market square in Manheim, Germany. A livestream of the incident has gone viral on social media sites.
A knife-wielding Muslim man went on a crazed stabbing spree, wounding several people at a purported “anti-Islam event” in southwest Germany before he was fired up and eventually detained by the police.

According to reports in the German media, the incident took place at around 11:30 am (local time) on Friday at a market square in Mannheim where an event was organised by Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa, described as “anti-Islamisation”.
In a statement, Mannheim Police said the attacker was detained after a major operation in which a rescue helicopter was deployed and train services were suspended after information was received about the attack.
Officers fired at the assailant, injuring him before he was detained. “A firearm was used against the attacker,” the police said, adding that the motive behind the brazen attack is being investigated.
A police officer was among those stabbed by the suspect before another officer neutralised him with a gunshot while a civilian was attempting to subdue him.

Meanwhile, a video of the incident went viral on social media platforms, showing civilians trying to subdue the assailant. The video, which was livestreamed by a user, showed the attacker stabbing a police officer before he is eventually shot by another cop while a civilian is trying to overpower him.

Who is Michael Stürzenberger?
As per a report by Deutsche Welle, the incident occured when known anti-Islam activist Michael Stuerzenberger, as part of his “Open Eyes” anti-Islam tour, was readying to address a small crowd gathered at the Marktplatz in downtown Mannheim.
Stürzenberger’s organisation Pax Europa said the anti-Islam activist was among those injured in the attack, the Deutsche Welle report said. However, police have not yet released any details about those injured in the knife attack.
Michael Stürzenberger, a self-proclaimed “Islam-critical journalist”, has been associated with far-right anti-Islam organisations, including the PEGIDA movement.
Notably, the incident took place at a time when the campaign for European Parliament elections nears its end with polls due in a week. The campaign has seen the far-right Alternative for Germany party highlight alleged risks of allowing immigrants from Muslim-majority countries.
