Hema Malini and Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved couples, have been married for 43 years. Despite their long-standing relationship, the couple maintains an unconventional living arrangement. Dharmendra resides with his first wife, Prakash Kaur, and their children, while Hema lives separately.
In an old interview with Lehren, Hema Malini candidly discussed the dynamics of her marriage and the reasons behind their living situation.
Reflecting on her unique marital setup, Hema Malini expressed that nobody desires to live apart from their spouse, but sometimes circumstances force such situations, and one has to accept them. She explained that ideally, every woman wishes to have a husband and children, like a typical family, but in her case, things turned out differently.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Hema Malini expressed contentment with her life. She emphasized that she does not harbor any resentment and is proud of raising her two daughters well. “I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well. Of course, he (Dharmendra) was there, always. Everywhere,” she said.
Hema also shared that Dharmendra has always been a concerned and supportive father, especially regarding their children’s future. Hema Malini shared that Dharmendra was particularly concerned about their children getting married early. She reassured him that it would happen when the time was right and the right person came along. With the blessings of God and their spiritual teacher (guru ma), everything eventually fell into place, she concluded.

The couple’s journey has not been without its challenges, particularly with Hema’s parents initially disapproving of their relationship due to Dharmendra’s existing marriage to Prakash Kaur. However, their enduring bond and mutual respect have kept them together, even if physically apart.
