The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather bulletin has notified that a fresh spell of a heatwave is expected to begin in West Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana from May 16th, 2024. On the other hand, southern regions like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and others are likely to continue to get wet spells with isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms till May 18th.
IMD issues orange alert for severe heatwave
The weather regulator has issued orange alerts and warned of severe heatwave conditions for West Rajasthan from May 17th to May 18th, South Haryana on May 19th, and in isolated pockets of Punjab. It is also expected to have heatwave conditions over West Rajasthan from May 15th to May 18th. Bihar, East Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, South Haryana, and Punjab will also be in the grip of a heatwave on May 17th and May 18th.
As per the IMD release, the southwest monsoon is expected to extend toward the South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and Southeast Bay of Bengal from May 19th.

A cyclonic circulation is situated over the Southeast Arabian Sea, near Kerala and a channel runs from this cyclonic circulation to Marathwada in lower tropospheric levels. In lower tropospheric levels near the Comorin area over the north Equatorial Indian Ocean, IMD has alerted about the presence of another cyclonic circulation. Under their influence, IMD has predicted that there will be isolated light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds over Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra from May 15th to May 17th. Similarly same weather conditions may also be there over Odisha, Gujarat state, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha on May 15th.
IMD’s warning for Heavy Rainfall, hailstorm
In its weather report, IMD has also indicated that there will be heavy rainfall over South interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Karaikal, and Puducherry from May 15th and will carry on till May 18th. There is a high possibility of scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the upcoming six days.
Isolated hailstorm activity over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Madhya Pradesh has also been alerted by IMD for May 15th.
