Upasana Singh, a seasoned actress known for her exceptional comedy skills, has been absent from the small screen for quite some time now. She gained fame on television through her roles in popular comedy shows like “Comedy Nights with Kapil” and “The Kapil Sharma Show.”. Upasana has been focusing on her production house and working on Punjabi films lately, shifting her focus from television to filmmaking.
Recently, Upasana Singh spoke to ETimes TV exclusively, where she opened up about her stint on shows with Kapil Sharma and if she is open to working with Kapil on his new show. She also shared her opinion on men cross-dressing as women on Kapil Sharma’s shows.
How did the show with Kapil Sharma happen?
So, Anil Kapoor’s 24 was going to be aired but it got delayed. So, the channel offered Kapil Sharma to do a show for a few weeks till 24 goes on air. Kapil came to my house and said, “Whenever I think of Bua’s character I think of you only. And I have spoken to the channel and they also think that you would be perfect for the character.”
Continue: My husband and family said that if I do this role, people will start thinking of me to be like that. It will affect my image. I come from theatre and love to do different roles so I took that chance because I found the character interesting. Bua’s character became a huge hit. In fact, people gave a lot of love to the character. They found her to be innocent because I played her like that. The show became a hit so the channel ran it for more than two and a half years.

Why did you exit the show?
There came a time when I was not satisfied with the character anymore. I enjoyed playing that character initially. Later, I lost interest in it. I asked Kapil, “If I am not finding it funny, how will people find it funny?” I was getting money but I was not satisfied with the role anymore. So, I left. But I still have a good relationship with Kapil. He did a voice-over for free for a Punjabi film Bai Ji Kuttange (2022) that I produced.
How do you react to the men cross-dressing as women on Kapil Sharma’s show on television and now on Netflix?
I don’t know whether I should be saying this but I have always liked women playing women. Why are men playing women when you have so many actresses in the industry?
Will you join Kapil’s new show The Great Indian Kapil Show if you are offered?
Yes, if my role is good. I want to play something substantial.
