Households will be able to access collateral-free low-interest loan products of around 7 per cent at present for the installation of residential RTS (rooftop solar) systems up to 3 kW.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore to provide up to Rs 78,000 subsidy for the installation of solar plants and 300 units of free power for one crore households. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024. Under the scheme, households will be provided with a subsidy to install solar panels on their roofs. The subsidy will cover up to 40 per cent of the cost of solar panels.
The scheme provides a central financial assistance (CFA) of 60 per cent of the system cost for 2 kW systems and 40 per cent of the additional system cost for systems between 2 kW to 3 kW capacity. The CFA will be capped at 3 kW.

At current benchmark prices, this will mean a Rs 30,000 subsidy for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW systems, and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher.
The households will apply for subsidies through the National Portal and will be able to select a suitable vendor for installing rooftop solar.

The scheme provides a component for payment security for renewable energy service company- (RESCO) based models as well as a fund for innovative projects in RTS.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Eligibility
The household must be an Indian citizen.
The household must own a house with a roof that is suitable for installing solar panels.
The household must have a valid electricity connection.
The household must not have availed any other subsidy for solar panels.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: How to apply online
Step 1 Visit the official website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/
Step 2 Provide the following details for registration.
– Select your State
– Select your Electricity Distribution Company
– Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
– Enter Mobile Number
– Enter Email
– Please follow the directions from the portal.
Step 3 Log in with your consumer number and Mobile Number.
Step 4 Apply for the rooftop solar as per the form.
Step 5 Fill out the online application form.
Step 6 Wait for feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once you get the feasibility approval, install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.
Step 7 Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.
Step 8 After installation of the net meter, and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate a commissioning certificate from the portal.
Step 9 Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal.
