Biting cold wave and dense fog led locals to urge authorities to take necessary measures for those seeking refuge from the cold in night shelters
The India Meteorological Department on Monday warned about cold-wave days in central parts of the nation for this month. It also predicted dense fog days over northwest and east India till January 4.
Amid the New Year spirit, the national capital on Tuesday woke up to mild fog. However, foggy conditions did affect train and flight operations. At least 26 trains approaching Delhi are running late.
As per IMD’s forecast, dense to very dense conditions are likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, North-east India and many other states.

Director General of IMD, Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra said, “During January 5 – January 11, we are expecting night temperature to fall, it may lead to cold wave conditions in some parts of central India… day temperature will also be below normal leading to cold day conditions especially in Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Maharashtra, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh.”

- The weather department predicted probable dense to very dense fog conditions in some parts of Haryana and Chandigarh between January 1-3, over Uttarakhand between January 2-6, East Rajasthan and isolated parts of West Rajasthan on January 2-3.
- Cold day to severe cold day conditions have been predicted over some parts of Uttar Pradesh and isolated areas of West Rajasthan on January 1 and 2.
- Dense fog and low visibilty affected as many as 21 trains in the national capital on Monday.
- The temperature is likely to dip by 2-3°C over many parts of Central and Northwest India during the next two days.
- Meanwhile, Kashmir was gripped by severe cold wave as the minimum temperature plunged two to three degrees further below the freezing point. The open skies have resulted in the minimum temperature sliding further in most parts, including Srinagar, the officials said.
