The upcoming Galaxy S24 series will be the torchbearer of Samsung’s generative AI ambitions with the S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra all but confirmed to give the first look at what the South Korean tech behemoth has been cooking up at HQ. Now, we know that the S24 series will let users get real-time translations during phone calls through a new feature called Live Translate. But that’s not the only AI feature you can expect to be at the heart of the next flagship Galaxy.

A new leak gives us more information about what’s in store and while it’s always advisable to take these rumours with a pinch of salt, it sure helps build excitement around products especially smartphones at a time when hardware is becoming more and more commoditised. So, without further ado, let’s dig in.
One of the purported Gen AI features tipped to launch with the Galaxy S24 series is called “Generative Edit” which seems heavily inspired from Google’s Magic Eraser function seen on the latest Pixel 8 Pro. Noted tipster Arsène Lupin (@MysteryLupin) appears to have got his hands on promo materials straight from inside Samsung that details the said feature. Like Magic Eraser, Samsung’s Generative Edit, too, will allow users to move and remove objects as well as fill in empty spaces in photos using AI.

Google requires Pixel 8 Pro users Google Photos backup and an active internet connection to use Magic Eraser. You’d think Qualcomm’s fastest chip— that’s high on AI smarts, too— would be enough to facilitate all this on-device locally but alas, the promo material mentions that Generative Edit, too, would require a Samsung account log in and an internet connection to work. That is a bummer, but we’ll see how it pans out eventually.

A thing to note is that Samsung seems to be working on making Generative Edit available across the whole Galaxy S24 line-up while in the case of Google, you’ll have to buy the pricier Pixel 8 Pro to use Magic Eraser. Anyhow, Samsung’s push for AI going forward is all out in the public domain. It has announced the Galaxy AI experience based on its in-house Gauss LLM and so, it’s safe to expect some of these efforts bearing fruit in the soon-to-launch Galaxy S24 series. The S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra are set to launch globally on January 17, according to reports, so it won’t be long before we get to see the final picture of how Samsung goes about tackling both the positives and flip side of generative AI.
