Newly-wed bride dies of suffocation after gas geyser leaks in Meerut – know safely tips to follow

New Delhi: In a shocking incident in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh, a newly-wed bride passed away due to suffocation after a gas geyser leaked. Reports suggest that the woman had been to the bathroom at her in-laws’ house to take a shower and had been in there for quite some time. When the family members tried to check on her and got no response, they reportedly knocked down the door to find her unconscious in a corner. She was then rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.

How do gas geysers cause suffocation?

Gas geysers are known to emit carbon monoxide which can be dangerous as within only a few minutes of inhaling, it can make one dizzy and unconscious. Doctors advise immediate medical intervention in this case as carbon monoxide poisoning cannot be treated with home remedies.

What are the risks of using gas geysers?

In the past, use of gas geysers reportedly contributed to epileptic seizures and death by suffocation which is why doctors recommend bathing in a well-ventilated bathroom with atleast one window if using a gas geyser. The symptoms that should never be overlooked include:

  1. Vomiting
  2. Fits
  3. Nausea
  4. Headache
  5. Dizziness

In some cases, experts say, there can be a risk of permanent brain damage. However, most cases can be treated with anti-seizure medication used for a few months. Exposure to the gas for over five minutes can result in dizziness and if this is prolonged, one can lose consciousness and may even die of suffocation.

How to use a gas geyser safely?

Doctors recommend the following tips to use a gas geyser safely:

  1. Check the geyser from time to time to check for risk of any leaks
  2. Install an exhaust fan and turn it on when the geyser is working
  3. Do not use if there is a leak
  4. Make sure to have atleast one window in the bathroom
  5. If you feel suffocated or start coughing even for a second, immediately step out to get some fresh air
