Any Aadhaar can be easily verified using the QR code available on all forms of Aadhaar using mAadhaarApp or Aadhaar QR code scanner. Aadhaar Issuing body UIDAI on Thursday said that the QR code scanner is freely available for both Android and iOS-based mobile phones, as well as window-based applications.

New Delhi: Aadhaar issuing body Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Thursday asked states and entities to first verify a person’s Aadhaar number before accepting it either in the physical or electronic form as a proof of identity. The UIDAI has suggested the move to check the misuse of Aadhaar and establish the genuineness of the identity proof in any form (Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar PVC card etc.) given by the individual.

The Aadhaar issuing authority, in a circular, stated that this would ensure that unscrupulous and anti-social elements do not indulge in any possible misuse. “It also promotes usage hygiene, and reasserts UIDAI’s stand that any 12-digit number is not an Aadhaar. Tampering of Aadhaar documents can be detected by offline verification, and tampering is a punishable offence and liable for penalties under Section 35 of the Aadhaar Act,” the UIDAI said.

How can Aadhaar be verified?

Any Aadhaar can be easily verified using the QR code available on all forms of Aadhaar using mAadhaarApp or Aadhaar QR code scanner. The UIDAI said that the QR code scanner is freely available for both Android and iOS-based mobile phones, as well as window-based applications.

Residents can also voluntarily use the Aadhaar number to establish their identity by presenting their Aadhaar in either paper or electronic form.

In its circular, the Aadhaar issuing body has urged the state governments to give necessary direction by stressing on the need for Aadhaar verification before usage. This is so that whenever Aadhaar is submitted as proof of identity, authentication/verification of the resident is performed by the concerned entity using Aadhaar as an identity document.
