The festival of Diwali is observed to celebrate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in exile in the forest. In the forest, Lord Rama was accompanied by his brother Laxman and wife Sita.
It is believed that after completing their banishment and defeating Ravana, Lord Rama, his brother Laxman, and his wife Sita, returned to Ayodhya. As it was the darkest night of the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar, the people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting the streets with earthen lamps. To this day, the day of their return is celebrated with the same enthusiasm and auspiciousness as Diwali.
Also on this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh are worshipped, which is known as Diwali Puja or Lakshmi Ganesh Puja.
