Major Water Transport Project To Come In UP, Bundelkhand to Connect With Prayagraj, Kanpur On Yamuna | Details

Uttar Pradesh is likely to get a major water transport project on the Yamuna River. The plan is to connect the Kanpur-Bundelkhand region directly to the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj.

This water transport route will be about 248 km and will stretch from Panchnad in Kalpi of Jalaun district to Prayagraj.

A letter has been sent to the government to include the project in the Kanpur Region Integrated Development Authority (KRIDA).

In the future, due to expansion from Delhi to Bengal, vehicles on the road will decrease, which will reduce pollution and accidents. Meanwhile, the tourism possibilities will also increase.

Earlier on March 28, 2024, a proposal was sent to the then Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra to transport goods by waterway from Kalpi of Jalaun in Bundelkhand to Bhognipur, Hamirpur of Kanpur countryside and to Prayagraj via Ghatampur, Fatehpur, Chitrakoot and Kaushambi on the border of Kanpur, to develop the industrial city of Kanpur as a big development area. Back then, the Uttar Pradesh Water Transport Authority was in the process of formation.

High-Level Committee sents proposal to govt

As per the latest update, Neeraj Srivastava, the Coordinator of the high-level development committee has now sent a letter to the government to test the proposal and develop water transport by linking it with KRIDA based on the possibilities explored earlier after the formation of the Act and rules of the authority.

Divisional Commissioner K. Vijayendra Pandian has taken KRIDA as his dream project and so the project will speed up.

Under the Kanpur division, Bhognipur of Kanpur Dehat and Kalpi of Jalaun in Jhansi will be made its center. Kalpi Inland Waterways (Waterway Transport Port) will be established. Bhognipur and Kalpi are 10 kilometers away and both are on the banks of Yamuna. Bhognipur is the biggest road junction in North India, connecting many states.

Why project could be a success?

Panchnad, the confluence of five rivers Yamuna, Chambal, Pahuj, Kwari, and Sindh, has a huge amount of water and is prudent for water transport projects. Further, in Yamuna, Betwa in Hamirpur, Ken in Banda, Mandakini River in Chitrakoot join.

Due to this joining of regional rivers, the water flow remains good throughout the year. There is a lot of water volume through the Ganga from Prayagraj to Bengal through Bihar. Therefore, it is very useful for waterway transport.

How will the project be beneficial?

With the construction of a waterway transport port in Bhognipur, the traffic transported by road from Jammu Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh and Purvanchal, Bihar, and Bengal will be facilitated through the waterway.

This will reduce the traffic pressure of heavy vehicles on the road, fuel will be saved. Smoke pollution will be reduced, accidents will stop. Defense corridors and industrial corridors in Jhansi, Chitrakoot, and Kanpur will benefit in transportation.
