Bank Strike News: Bank Unions Announce Nationwide Strike On March 24-25 As Talks With IBA Fail; Details

Bank Strike News: The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on Thursday said that the two-day nationwide strike on March 24 and 25 will go ahead as scheduled. It said the strike will go ahead as scheduled after talks with the Indian Banks Association (IBA) on key demands failed to yield any positive result.

In the meetings with the IBA, all UFBU members raised issues like recruitment in all cadres and a five-day working week. However, the key issues remained unresolved, said National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE) general secretary L. Chandrasekhar.

The UFBU, comprising nine bank employee unions, had earlier called the strike to press for demands like filling up of labour and officer director posts in public sector banks.

The unions are also demanding withdrawal of the recent Department of Financial Services (DFS) guidelines on performance reviews and performance-related incentives, alleging that such measures are creating job security threats for employees.

The UFBU further opposed what it called “micromanagement” of public sector banks by the DFS, saying such interference would undermine the autonomy of bank boards.

Demands Of Employees

Other demands include resolving outstanding issues with the IBA and raising the ceiling to Rs. 25 lakh by amending the Gratuity Act, linking it with the Government Employees Scheme and seeking exemption from income tax.

The UFBU comprises major bank unions such as the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), and All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA).
