Milk prices in Karnataka are expected to rise by Rs 5 per litre following the state budget announcement on March 7. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is awaiting final approval from the government before implementing the price revision. Additionally, the quantity of milk packets will be reduced from 1,050 ml to one litre, reversing an earlier increase introduced last year.
If approved, the price of Nandini-toned milk will increase from Rs 44 to Rs 47 per litre, marking the steepest hike in the past three years. Previous price revisions by KMF included a Rs 3 per litre hike in 2022 and a Rs 2 per litre hike in 2024, both of which were accompanied by an extra 50 ml per litre as compensation.

Opposition criticism
The proposed hike has faced opposition, with the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, blaming the government’s fiscal mismanagement for the increase. However, KMF Managing Director B Shivaswamy justified the price adjustment, citing a decline in milk procurement.
Declining milk procurement
According to Shivaswamy, daily milk procurement has dropped from 85-99 lakh litres to 79-81 lakh litres. This decrease has led to the discontinuation of the additional 50 ml that was previously provided. Despite the price hike, Shivaswamy emphasised that Nandini milk would still be more affordable than several other brands in Karnataka and other states.
