Watch: Skydiver Suffers Mid-Air Seizure, Instructor Comes To Heroic Rescue

Christopher Jones

An old video of a skydiver having a seizure and losing consciousness during free fall has surfaced online. According to ABC News, 22-year-old Christopher Jones from Perth was performing a routine training dive to become a skydiving instructor when he jumped from a plane 12,000 feet over Western Australia. Jones fell unconscious at 9,000 feet after experiencing a seizure mid-air.

Jones has epilepsy, but he thought he had it under control, reports said. For 30 horrifying seconds, he fell 124 miles per hour towards the ground. Jones, who was having convulsions as he descended, drifted further away from Sheldon McFarlane, his instructor.

A quick-thinking McFarlane managed to get to Jones just as he reached 4,000 feet, pulled his ripcord, and released Jones’ parachute. At about 3,000 feet, Jones reported that he regained consciousness 1,000 feet after the rescue. His skydive was captured on a camera mounted on McFarlane’s helmet.

“Then the next thing I know I wake up at 3,000 feet, thankfully underneath a fully inflated parachute. He’s a hero. He’s a massive hero,” Jones said of McFarlane as quoted by ABC News.

As per ABC News, Jones was in stage five of what he refers to as the school’s Accelerated Free Fall program when the near-fatal incident happened in 2015. His fall video, which he later uploaded to YouTube, has received more than 20 million views to date.

McFarlane claimed that Jones had the necessary medical records, and that if he hadn’t arrived at Jones in time, an automated launcher would have started to draw the rip cord, according to the Guardian.
