Delhi Metro Services To Begin Early On Feb 5, 8 For Polls. LG Declares Public Holiday For Voting — Updates

Delhi Metro services will begin at 04:00 AM on February 5 and 8, 2025, to facilitate election duty staff during the Assembly elections and vote counting. This decision has been announced by Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director, Corporate Communications, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

On the day of the Assembly Election, February 5, and vote counting day on February 8, all Delhi Metro train services will start from their terminal stations at 04:00 AM. The services will run at a frequency of 30 minutes until 06:00 AM. After 6:00 AM, regular metro services will operate for the rest of the day.

Additionally, to support polling officials and staff returning late after election duty, the last metro services on all lines will be extended on the intervening night of 5th and 6th February 2025. The specific timings for the last train on each line have been provided in an attached table.

Delhi LG Declares Public Holiday For Voting On Feb 5

Meanwhile, as the Delhi Assembly elections approach, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor has declared February 5, 2025, a public holiday for all government offices, local bodies, public sector undertakings, and autonomous bodies in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. This notification was issued under the orders of the Lieutenant Governor.

In terms of voter demographics, Delhi has a total of 1.55 crore registered voters, with 83.49 lakh male voters and 71.73 lakh female voters. The third-gender voter count stands at 1,261, and there are 25.89 lakh young voters. The elections will be held across 70 constituencies, with 58 general seats and 12 reserved for Scheduled Castes. A total of 13,033 polling stations will be set up, including 70 managed by persons with disabilities (PWDs) and 70 managed by women.

A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that 19% of the candidates contesting in the Delhi Assembly elections have criminal cases against them, slightly down from 20% in the 2020 elections.

The major contest in Delhi is between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress. AAP and Congress are contesting all 70 seats, while BJP is contesting 68 seats, leaving one seat for its ally JD(U) and one seat for Chirag Paswan’s party. 

In the previous election, AAP secured 62 seats, while BJP won 8. Congress failed to win any seats.
