Economic Survey 2024-25: Ahead of the Union Budget 2025-26 presentation by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Economic Survey 2024-25 on Friday. The survey will offer an official assessment of the country’s economic performance during the ongoing fiscal year and highlight the challenges currently facing the nation.

The Economic Survey, prepared by a team led by Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran, will outline the economic developments and sectoral progress, as well as provide a forecast for the upcoming financial year.

On Saturday, Finance Minister Sitharaman will present the first full Budget of the Modi 3.0 government, with expectations of changes to income tax slabs, significant support for infrastructure, and increased allocations for rural development and education. The budget is anticipated to provide a boost to India’s fifth-largest economy, which is projected to experience its slowest growth in four years, driven by weak urban demand and inflation risks caused by a depreciating currency.

Timing of Economic Survey Presentation

The Economic Survey 2025 will be presented on Friday, January 31, marking the beginning of the Budget Session of Parliament. The session will commence at 11 am, with the Economic Survey being presented shortly after President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session. Finance Minister Sitharaman will present the survey separately in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Significance of the Economic Survey

The Economic Survey, compiled by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance, provides insights into the economy’s state and indicators for the fiscal year 2024-25, along with an outlook for the next year. The document may also provide clues about the government’s approach to the Budget 2025-26.

The Economic Survey is anticipated to offer key themes and special chapters, alongside a review of various sectors. Past surveys have focused on issues such as the country’s economic resilience (2024), recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic (2023), and an agile economic response (2022).

Economic Outlook

India’s economy grew by 5.4% in the July-September 2024 quarter, lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s 7% forecast. For the full fiscal year, the government expects growth of 6.4%, while the RBI has revised its forecast to 6.6% from 7.2%.

Agenda for the Budget Session 2025

The Budget Session will address several important legislative matters, including the introduction and passage of key bills such as the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Other significant proposals include updates to oilfield regulations, safety standards for industrial boilers, and reforms in the management of religious endowments. Additionally, maritime laws will be modernized through several bills related to shipping and the carriage of goods by sea.
