Big Change In UPI Rules, Remove These Characters From Your ID Before February 1

According to NPCI’s latest circular, UPI IDs containing special characters such as #, @, or $ will be blacklisted. From February 1, UPI IDs will only be allowed to include numbers (0-9) and letters (A-Z)

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a new circular regarding UPI transactions, set to take effect from February 1, 2025. According to the revised regulations, UPI IDs containing special characters such as #, @, $, or * will be blacklisted, making it mandatory for all digital payment users to update their IDs accordingly.

UPI’s Growing Popularity and Security Concerns

In recent years, Unified Payments Interface or UPI has largely replaced cash, emerging as a key payment method. People use it for both small and large transactions, from grocery shopping to making reservations.

By December 2024, the number of UPI transactions had reached 16.73 billion, reflecting an 8% increase compared to previous months. While cash transactions still exist, digital payments have gained immense popularity.

Tier 1 cities in India are leading in UPI transactions. However, with this increasing adoption, UPI-related scams and frauds have also surged, affecting users’ bank accounts. To enhance the security of the UPI ecosystem, NPCI has introduced this new regulation, which is now mandatory for all UPI users.

What Does NPCI’s Circular Say?

If you rely on UPI for transactions, this update is crucial for you. According to NPCI’s circular, UPI IDs should no longer contain special characters. From February 1, UPI IDs will only be allowed to include only numbers (0-9) and alphabets (A-Z).

Many users currently have special characters in their UPI IDs, and to continue using UPI, they must update their IDs immediately. This measure aims to strengthen digital security and ensure the seamless functioning of the UPI ecosystem.

NPCI issued this circular on January 9, stating that the rule must be strictly followed. This means that if your UPI ID contains characters, you will not be able to make payments from 1 February, and your transactions will automatically fail.

Although most banks and payment platforms have already implemented this change, those who have not updated their IDs must do so before the deadline.
