‘Pass Behind…’: ATC’s Final Messages To American Airlines & Military Chopper Moments Before Crash

As many as 64 people were on board in the American Airlines plane during the time of the deadly mid-air crash that killed several passengers.

As the horrific mid-air crash between a commercial airplane, with 64 on board, and a military helicopter shook the United States, the conversations that took place moments before the disaster came to the fore on Thursday.

American Airlines Flight 5342 carried 64 people, including the crew members while the military chopper had three people on board during the time of the crash that took place on Wednesday night (local time), according to reports.

The rescuers have pulled out at least 19 bodies from the Potomac River, according to the local media reports.

Horrific video of the crash also surfaced on social media.

What Happened Moments Before the Mid-Air Collision?

The Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine jet which was manufactured in 2004, was inbound to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and was at an altitude of around 400 feet, flying at a speed of about 140 miles per hour, news agency AP reported.

The flight underwent a rapid loss of altitude over the Potomac River, according to its radio transponder data.

A few minutes before landing, the arriving jet was asked by the air traffic controllers if it could land on the shorter Runway 33 at the airport, to which the pilots responded in affirmative.

After the confirmation from the pilots, the controllers cleared the plane to land on Runway 33 as the flight tracking sites showed the aircraft adjusted its approach to the newly assigned runway, AP reported.

Less than 30 seconds before the massive crash, an air traffic controller asked the military chopper if it had the arriving commercial flight in sight.

“PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ,” the controller made another radio call to the helicopter moments later.

The two mid-air aircraft crashed seconds after that.

The jet’s radio transponder stopped transmission nearly 2,400 feet short of the runway, that according to the map, falls roughly over the middle of the river.
