Stock Market Holiday On Makar Sankranti, Stock Market Holiday On Lohri: Lohri and Makar Sankranti are among the important festivals of India. The two are celebrated in different ways and with different names across the country. In Punjabi, the festival is celebrated as Lohri while in UP, Bihar and Jharkhand, the festival is celebrated as Makar Sankranti and in the South it is celebrated as Pongal. Lohri will be celebrated on Monday, January 13 while Makar Sankranti is to be observed on Tuesday, January 14.

This has left the traders and stock market enthusiasts to wonder whether India’s leading stock exchanges – NSE and BSE – will be operational on January 13 and January 14.

Lohri is the harvest festival of Punjab and is widely celebrated in Northern India. People offer prayer to God of Fire (Agni) and pray for prosperity and happiness on the day. The festival marks the end of the sowing season of winter crops and welcomes the harvest season and farmers pray for promising harvesting in the season.

Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan is also referred to as Maghi, Poush Sankranti or simply Sankranti in different parts of the country. On this day, people take holy dip in water bodies, offer prayer to Sun God and also donate grains, sweets and other things to the poor and needy. It is believed that donation on the day brings in happiness and prosperity.

Stock market open or closed on Lohri, Makar Sankranti?

As Lohri and Makar Sankranti is on Monday, January 13 and Tuesday, January 14 this year, investors are confused if the stock market is open or closed. The stock exchanges – BSE and NSE are open on both the days. No trading holidays have been declared on these days so far.

The currency derivatives and commodity derivatives segments are also open for trading on both the days.

Lohri and Makar Sankranti are not included in the list of trading holidays in 2025, as per the holiday calendar on NSE. Hence, the stock market timings on both the days will be as usual.

The pre-open trading will commence at 9 AM and run until 9.15 AM. The regular stock market trading will begin at 9.15 AM and close as usual at 3.30 PM.

Stock market holidays in 2025

There are a total of 14 stock market holidays in 2025, as per the holiday calendar of BSE and NSE. The first stock market holiday of 2025 is on February 26 on the occasion of Mahashivratri. January 26, Republic Day is a holiday in the stock market but as it falls on Sunday this year, the share market will be closed as usual.

The last holiday for 2025 is on December 25 for Christmas.

October 21, 2025, Tuesday shall be a trading holiday on account of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. Muhurat Trading will be conducted on that day. Timings of Muhurat Trading shall be notified subsequently through a circular, said the NSE on its website.
