Vaikunta Ekadasi 2025: Significance
According to Padma Purana, Vaikunta Ekadasi holds great significance. The legend states that Lord Vishnu fought a demon named Muran, who was terrorising the gods. To defeat Muran, Lord Vishnu retreated to a cave in Badarikashrama, where a female power emerged from him and destroyed the demon. Lord Vishnu named this power ‘Ekadashi’ and granted her a boon.
Ekadashi selflessly requested that those who fasted on this day would be forgiven for their past sins. Lord Vishnu declared that devotees who observed this fast would attain Vaikunth. As per Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu opened the gates of Vaikuntam for two demons who sought a boon. This led to the tradition of creating a Vaikunta Dwara in Vishnu temples, allowing devotees to walk through the gateway and attain salvation.

Vaikunta Ekadasi 2025: Rituals
Vaikunta Ekadasi fasting involves specific guidelines. Smartha families typically fast on the first day, while sanyasis, widows, and those seeking Moksha fast on the second day. Devotees seeking Lord Vishnu’s love and affection can fast on both days. During the fast, milk and seedless fruits are allowed, while rice, grains, vegetables and fruits with seeds are prohibited. Engaging in holy prayers, chanting Vishnu mantras and participating in yagnas and rituals honouring Lord Vishnu are also encouraged.
On Vaikunth Ekadashi, devotees should avoid certain foods, including cauliflower, eggplant, tomatoes, and leafy vegetables. Spices, salts, curd, yoghurt, buttermilk, coffee and tea are also prohibited. Visiting Lord Vishnu temples and participating in rituals organised on this day are considered highly beneficial. By following these guidelines and observing the Vaikunta Ekadasi fast, devotees can seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings and attain spiritual growth.
Breaking the Ekadashi fast, known as Parana, is a crucial process. It should be done after sunrise on the next day of the fast, within the Dwadashi Tithi timeframe. It’s essential to avoid Parana during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi. The most auspicious time to break the fast is during Pratahkal.
