The Bihar government’s Agriculture Department announced a new initiative to encourage the cultivation of fruits, flowers and vegetables on the rooftops of apartments and residential buildings. Under this scheme, residents in several cities will be provided pots and plants at subsidised rates to encourage them to do terrace gardening. The decision was finalised during a meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister Mangal Pandey on Friday.

In the initial phase, the scheme will benefit residents of Patna Sadar, Danapur, Phulwari and Khagaul in the state capital Patna, as well as urban areas in Bhagalpur, Gaya and Muzaffarpur districts.
Individuals owning houses, flats or possessing at least 300 square feet of free rooftop space can avail benefits of the scheme. Apartment residents must secure a no-objection certificate from their registered society to participate.

The scheme offers a unit cost of Rs 48,574 for a 300-square-foot rooftop unit, with a 75 per cent subsidy amounting to Rs 36,430.50. Beneficiaries will need to contribute the remaining Rs 12,143.50.
Minister Mangal Pandey underscored the significance of the rooftop gardening scheme, urging officials to maximize awareness about its benefits. The initiative aims to transform urban spaces into hubs for sustainable cultivation, contributing to the state’s agricultural growth and urban greenery.

Additionally, the Agriculture Minister reviewed ongoing schemes for the current financial year during the meeting, including the Tubewell Scheme, Vegetable Development Scheme, Onion Storage Structure and Makhana Storage House Construction. Progress updates were also taken on programs under the Bihar State Organic Mission, such as the Drone Didi Scheme and Climate-Friendly Agriculture Programme.
