The national capital began Thursday with ‘very poor’ air quality levels in several areas, thick smog, and low visibility, raising health and travel concerns. However, light rainfall predicted for the next two days by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) may offer some respite.

As per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 340 at 9 a.m., reflecting hazardous pollution levels. Out of the 38 air quality monitoring stations in the city, 32 recorded AQI values falling under the “very poor” category.

For reference, the AQI scale categorizes air quality as follows: 0–50 is “good,” 51–100 is “satisfactory,” 101–200 is “moderate,” 201–300 is “poor,” 301–400 is “very poor,” and 401–500 is “severe.”

Delhiites woke up to heavy smog on December 26, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) plunging into the ‘very poor’ category. Persistent pollution and stagnant weather conditions contributed to the deteriorating air quality. Authorities have urged citizens to minimize outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

The IMD has forecast light rainfall in Delhi and nearby regions on Thursday and Friday, which could help improve air quality by reducing airborne pollutants. The minimum temperature recorded on Thursday morning was 7°C, while the maximum is expected to hover around 20°C. A further drop in temperatures over the weekend may lead to cold wave conditions in the city.

Fog Disruptions Likely at Delhi Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport issued an advisory early Thursday, cautioning passengers about low visibility due to dense fog. While flight operations were reported to be normal, authorities warned of potential delays. Passengers are advised to stay in touch with airlines for updates, as foggy conditions are expected to persist till December 29.

As residents grapple with smog and political controversies, the IMD’s prediction of rain and a significant drop in temperatures might offer some relief from pollution. However, the anticipated cold wave could bring its own challenges. Citizens are advised to prepare for fluctuating weather conditions in the days ahead.

This mix of environmental, travel, and political challenges underscores the complexities of life in the national capital during the winter season.
