A 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh died after being pulled from the debris of a collapsed four-storey building in Sohana village, Mohali district, Punjab, on Saturday, officials reported.

Drishti Verma, a resident of Theog, was rescued in critical condition and rushed to Sohana Hospital, according to Viraj S Tidke, the officiating deputy commissioner. Unfortunately, Verma later succumbed to her injuries.
As rescue operations entered Day 2 on Sunday, another body was recovered from the site.
The building collapsed on Saturday evening, leaving at least five people trapped. The district authorities launched a rescue operation. Two excavators were pressed into service as part of the operation. A fire brigade team was also present.

A National Disaster Response Team (NDRF) team, too, reached the spot. The fire brigade also participated in the operation, officials said.
Several excavators were pressed into service as part of the rescue operation. Medical teams, along with an ambulance, were deployed. Tidke said anyone with apprehension that their family members may be the ones trapped in the debris can dial district control room number 0172-2219506.

Prompt Action By Indian Army
Indian Army responded swiftly to rescue persons trapped in the tragic collapse of the four-storey building at Mohali. An Engineer Task Force of 80 Army personnel along with earthmoving equipment have been working overnight and are continuing efforts to look for survivors.
He said all major hospitals in the city, such as Civil Hospital (attached within Medical College), Fortis, Max, and Sohana, have been put on alert to cater to the wounded.
He said that required equipment and machinery had been made available to the rescuers, in addition to those brought by the NDRF and army.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration.”
“We pray that there is no loss of life, we will also take action against the culprits. Appeal to the people to cooperate with the administration,” he added in his post on X.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Mohali) Deepak Pareek, who took stock of the situation, said a case was registered against building owners Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh.
“There is yet no figure whether someone is (trapped) inside or not. Our teams are working. Efforts are on to clear the debris as soon as possible. Lighting arrangements have been made for the rescue operation,” he said.
A local resident said a loud noise was heard when the building collapsed.
Preliminary information suggests that the building collapsed after a basement was dug in a nearby area.

Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, among others, also reached the spot.
Singh said, “It is an unfortunate incident. Rescue operation is in full swing.”
