Indian Railways makes BIG announcement on free travel during Maha Kumbh Mela

The Ministry of Railways has dismissed claims suggesting passengers will be allowed to travel free of cost during the Maha Kumbh Mela, labeling them as “baseless.” In an official statement, the Railways clarified that no such provisions exist. “It has come to our notice that certain media outlets are reporting that passengers can travel free during the Maha Kumbh Mela,” the statement read. “Indian Railways categorically denies these reports, which are completely unfounded and misleading.”

The ministry emphasized that traveling without a valid ticket remains strictly prohibited under railway rules and regulations, and constitutes a punishable offense. “There are no provisions for free travel during the Maha Kumbh Mela or any other occasion,” it reiterated.

The Railways also assured passengers of its commitment to providing smooth travel during the event. To manage the expected surge in passenger numbers, it has announced measures such as setting up special holding areas, additional ticket counters, and other necessary facilities.

Indian Railways’ preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025

Last week, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the extensive preparations being made by Indian Railways for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 during the winter session of Parliament. The minister emphasized the scale of operations, citing the success of handling passenger traffic during festivals like Chhath Puja and Diwali, where 7,900 special trains managed to transport 1.80 crore passengers efficiently.

For the Maha Kumbh, Indian Railways is gearing up for an even larger influx of travelers. A total of 13,000 special trains are planned to operate during the event, aiming to ensure seamless travel for millions of pilgrims flocking to Prayagraj for this spiritual gathering.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, set to take place in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, is one of the largest and most significant religious gatherings in the world. Scheduled from January 14 to April 29, 2025, this event is expected to attract millions of devotees, ascetics, spiritual seekers, and tourists from across the globe.

The Kumbh Mela is a sacred Hindu festival held every 12 years at four rotating locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. The Maha Kumbh Mela, which occurs once every 12 Purna (complete) Kumbh cycles (approximately 144 years), is considered the most auspicious of all.
