IMD Weather Update: Severe cold wave conditions likely across Northwest India, heavy rainfall alert for Southern India

According to the Met Department, cold waves and severe weather conditions are expected to cover major parts of Northwest India from 18 December to 21 December.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that on 18 December 2024, Cold wave conditions are likely to engulf Northwest India this week. Moreover, heavy showers are likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam because of the influence of a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Cold Wave Prediction

According to the Met Department, cold waves and severe weather conditions are expected to cover major parts of Northwest India from 18 December to 21 December. It will be there in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Isolated cold waves might occur from 22 December to 23 December. Severe cold wave conditions are forecast to get severe in East Rajasthan from December 19 to 22 December. Similarly, Jammu-Kashmir, West Rajasthan, and Ladakh are expected to experience it till 23 December.

IMD’s Warning for Fog and Frost Condition

Dense fog is anticipated in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh for today. Assam and Meghalaya may get it from December 18 to December 20 and East Rajasthan might get it from December 19 to December 22. Additionally, ground frost conditions are likely to take place in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh from December 18 to 21 December.

Delhi/NCR Weather Alert

The Delhi/NCR region is projected to have clear skies along with dense fog and smog. Meanwhile, in the national capital, Delhi Traffic Police has intensified vehicle checks after the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage IV was executed to curb the air quality. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 24 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast for South India

A low pressure over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to result in heavy downpours in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rayalaseema over the coming days. Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema are likely to receive it from December 18 to 19 December. Isolated intense rains are likely to occur in Yanam and Coastal Andhra Pradesh for the same duration, whereas isolated heavy spells may be experienced from December 18 to December 20. Light to moderate rains accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms may take place over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from December 18 to December 20 and Odisha is likely to get it from December 19 to December 20.
