Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2024: Maharashtra govt announces December 6 as public holiday; from liquor shops to banks – Here’s what’s open, what’s closed

The state government issued a notification declaring December 6 a local holiday for state and semi-government offices in Mumbai and suburban areas.

Mumbai observes a local holiday in honour of Mahaparinirvan Diwas on Friday (December 6), marking the death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. The Maharashtra government has declared this holiday for all state and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburbs, anticipating a large influx of visitors to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar to pay their respects.

The 69th Mahaparinirvan Diwas, commemorating the death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, will be observed at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex this Friday. The event, organised by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, will pay tribute to the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, as stated in an official release.

What will remain closed in Mumbai today?

  • State and semi-government offices and schools in Mumbai and suburban areas will remain closed today.
  • Liquor shops across the city will remain shut, as today is observed as a dry day.

What will remain open in Mumbai today?

  • Public and private banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), will continue their operations as usual.
  • Stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) will operate without disruption.

Special arrangements for devotees by Indian Railways

In light of the expected crowd at Chaityabhoomi and nearby areas, Central Railway has implemented special measures:

  • 12 additional suburban trains (six each on the main and harbour lines) will run on the nights of December 5 and 6 to accommodate the influx of visitors.
  • Holding areas have been set up near key railway stations, including Dadar, to accommodate 7,000-8,000 people.
  • Separate entry and exit points have been established at Dadar station for smoother crowd management.
  • Special train details are available at enquiry counters at Mumbai CSMT, Dadar, Thane, and Kalyan stations.
  • Frequent announcements are being made, and a special ticket-checking squad has been deployed to ensure only authorized passengers board the trains.
  • Platform tickets will be restricted to select groups, including senior citizens and people with disabilities, at major stations until December 9.

Mumbai traffic advisory 

To manage the crowds around Shivaji Park and Chaityabhoomi, Mumbai Traffic Police has implemented a traffic arrangement from 6:00 am on December 5 until midnight on December 7. Commuters are urged to plan their journeys carefully to avoid inconvenience due to road closures or diversions.

Restricted entry for heavy vehicles on the following roads

  • SVS Road (Mahim Junction to Hardikar Junction)
  • LJ Road (Mahim Junction to Gadkari Junction)
  • Gokhale Road (Gadkari Junction to Dhanmil Naka)
  • Senapati Bapat Road (Mahim Railway Station to Vadacha Naka)
  • Tilak Bridge (Dadar TT Circle to Veer Kotwal Udyan to NC Kelkar Road) will be closed for vehicular traffic.
