IMD Weather Forecast: Snowfall, dense fog and cold temperatures expected across northwest India as western disturbance approaches

This weather condition is expected to result in light spells and snowfall in the Western Himalayan region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has observed that a new western disturbance will likely impact the Western Himalayan region and nearby plains of Northwest India from December 8, 2024. This weather condition is expected to result in light spells and snowfall in the Western Himalayan region. Moreover, moderate isolated downpours are predicted for Haryana and Punjab on December 8 and 9.

Dense fog is forecast to engulf isolated areas of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana from late morning hours from December 7 to December 9. In terms of temperatures, the Met Department has alerted that Northwest India is likely to experience a drop in minimum temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius for the next three days, conditions may get stable later. Likewise, East India is projected to see a dip in the temperature of around 2 degrees Celsius for the upcoming two days. No major changes are expected in the minimum temperatures for Central India for the next five days.

Delhi-NCR weather forecast

The national capital has been predicted to receive mild fog on Friday, with maximum and minimum temperatures to hover around 26 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, Delhi recorded its coldest night of this season with temperatures going down by 8.5 degrees Celsius.  The sky is expected to continue to be clear and the surface winds might blow from the northwest with a speed below 8 kmph in the morning. Smog and mist are likely to be there in the early morning.

Snowfall prediction for Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal Pradesh, after an extended period of dry spells during the post-monsoon period, the local weather department has forecast isolated showers and snowfall in part of the state. For December 8, a yellow alert has been issued for lightning and thunderstorms in districts like Shimla, Sirmaur, Kangra, Bilaspur, Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Solan. The influence of an active western disturbance accompanied by strong easterly winds will lead to rains on December 7 and is likely to escalate on December 8 and will continue till December 9.
