When it comes to the world’s most expensive car, the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail currently holds the title with a price tag of 30 million dollars (approximately Rs 252 crore). But have you heard of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that was rolled out by Mercedes-Benz back in 1955? At present, only two units of this vintage car exist in the world. One of them was sold at a staggering venue of 142 million dollars at a car auction in May 2022. It led the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe to secure a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive four-wheeler ever auctioned.
The previous record for the “most valuable car” was held by a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO. This treasured edition claimed a bid of 70 million dollars in 2018. According to GRW, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut for the company’s Silver Arrows racing team. Not only for its lightweight frame, but the car was also popular for its robust powertrain which was incorporated from Mercedes’ title-winning W196 Formula One car.

An auto enthusiast who goes by the name “Supercar Blondie” on Instagram was privileged to enjoy a test drive of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. In a video dropped on the Meta platform, she was captured sharing details of the vintage car. It comes with a small cabin, with the interior featuring a red leather finish.
Originally designed as a racing car, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR has very little space in its boot which can accommodate an extra wheel and some essential parts. The steering is removable and the sitting arrangement is also quite fascinating. “You have no space for both your legs. What you have to do is straddle,” Supercar Blondie was heard saying in the video.

The lucky person who has now become the new owner of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR is not allowed to resale the car, as reported by Telegraph. Paired with a 3.0-litre straight-eight engine, it can clock a top speed of 180 miles (290 km) per hour. When it was launched in the 1950s, the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was tipped to be the fastest road car in the world. It was actually engineered as a street-legal variant of the renowned W 196 R Grand Prix car.
