Delhi’s air remains hazardous

Air pollution levels in Delhi remained critically high on Monday, with the capital’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to 349, up from 318 the previous day. According to the SAMEER app, which provides hourly updates on the National Air Quality Index, the AQI was recorded at 218 at 9 am but surged to 377 by 7 pm due to low wind speeds.

By 5:30 pm, seven out of Delhi’s 38 air quality-monitoring stations reported AQI levels in the “severe” category, and this number increased to 14 by 7 pm. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) confirmed that Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI, measured at 4 pm, stood at 349.

Environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari explained that the rise in AQI levels is due to a combination of stagnant winds, with speeds below 10 km/h, and dropping temperatures that cause pollutants to become trapped near the ground.
